Feb. 2024: AG candidates Deberry, Jackson

Join the Wake Democratic Forum Thursday, February 1, 2024. We will be hearing from two North Carolina primary candidates: Incumbent Durham District Attorney Satana Deberry, and U.S. Congressman Jeff Jackson. AG candidate Tim Dunn has been invited as well.

Incumbent candidate for Durham District Attorney Satana Deberry was raised in Hamlet, NC by two public school teachers in the same area her family was previously enslaved. She graduated from Princeton University (sociology) and later earned her law and MBA degrees from Duke University. Under her oversight since becoming DA in 2019, the Durham DA office eliminated the rape kit backlog plaguing district attorney offices across the state, prosecuted more cold case sexual assault crimes than any other district attorney in North Carolina, and oversaw Durham County’s first successful prosecution of a human trafficking case since 2011. She is a 2020 recipient of North Carolina’s Dogwood Award, created by Attorney General Josh Stein to recognize North Carolinians dedicated to keeping people safe, healthy, and happy in their communities. A mother of two grown daughters, DA Deberry previously served as a defense attorney in Hamlet; General Counsel for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services; and Executive Director of North Carolina Housing Coalition.

Currently a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Attorney General candidate Jeff Jackson was the second-youngest NC Senator in the state Senate after his election in 2014.  A graduate of Emory University (philosophy), Rep. Jackson earned his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill with help from the G.I.bill, following a year-long deployment in Afghanistan. He served three years as the assistant district attorney in Gaston County, where he tried more than one hundred cases. During his eight years in the General Assembly, Jeff dedicated much of his time to reforming the criminal justice system, including working to close the consent loophole, decrease unnecessary charges and arrests, and improve expungement laws. Rep. Jackson is in his 20th year of military service, drilling monthly as a Major in the Army National Guard. He and his wife have three children between five and fourteen.

The Wake Democratic Forum (formerly known as the Wake Democratic Men’s Club) is sponsoring the event. Dinner is $25, but up to ten Young Democrats may receive a $15 fellowship (code YDEMS0224) using the honor system at check out.
